Schooling-Mama Highlights

I had two homeschooling highmarks this week, and I wanted to document them while they are fresh in my mind.

Tonight, I came in the room and found Lily reading out loud from Genesis! This was the first time that she just cracked open the Bible by herself, and for no reason without being prompted decided to just read a chapter. It was so precious to hear my sweetheart motoring through the Words of God "just because!"

Everyone talks about how neat it is to teach your child to read. But we had a rough first year (every homeschool books says the first is the toughest) and although Lily did well learning to read, for some reason, I just didn't "feel the love."

But this year is a different story! It has been such a joy to see her reading continue to improve and now she is really taking off! My heart is so touched whenever I find her with her nose in a book, for no reason, just trying to find out what those words say!

And my second highlight is that Joey read his first "book" last week! Now, I have not started any formal teaching with him. But he learned his alphabet phonemes from a DVD (**insert sheepish grin**) and my sister opened up one of their BOB books (very simple first books) and he read it! (See...I had nothing to do with it!) And what was even sweeter was that he was so proud of himself and keeps asking me to read. It makes me so excited for next year! I have a feeling I'm going to "feel the love" from the very beginning the second time around. :)

I'm not homeschooling my boys at the moment, but I know my mom thought teaching a child to read was one of the most trying tasks. It's nice that your daughter is reading so well now. How old is she?

Aw, I'm so glad he wants to read more. He did so good with the Bob book...leap frog really pays off! :)

Thanks for the comments. Lily is six. I think it was her newbie mother that made the task of learning to read so difficult. :) Although, I have learned a few things...so I'm hopeful that next time will be better.

My poor guinea-pig child. She gets experimented on in every stage of life!
